Cardiovascular and metabolic health in Costa Rica

According to World Health Organization estimates, these are the main cardiovascular and metabolic indicators for Costa Rica, compared with the 34 countries and territories of the Americas with a sports medicine society (FIMS/COPAMEDE).

In Costa Rica, 21.3% of all deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases (2021). Hypertension affects 37.8% of adults aged 30–79 (95% CI: 31.0–44.6; 2019), and only 49.7% of people with hypertension have it under control (2019). Diabetes affects 23.2% of adults (95% CI: 17.0–29.9; 2022). The probability of dying between ages 30 and 70 from a noncommunicable disease is 9.9% (2021).
